The History of Magic: The Gathering
Game designer Richard Garfield planned to release his game “Robo Rally” in 1993. Initially, the renowned Wizards of the Coast publisher was interested. However, the company, facing financial difficulties, realized that producing the game would be too costly and risky. They asked Garfield for an alternative. He presented Magic: The Gathering: A quick card game for in-between - this is how the game was marketed in its original version. The publisher began manufacturing and distribution.
It developed into a worldwide success. Revenues and the number of players increased annually. Thanks to high revenues, Wizards of the Coast almost single-handedly recovered financially and was even acquired by the American game giant Hasbro in 1999. Today, over 35 million players of different ages are regularly captivated by Magic. Exciting tournaments take place worldwide every year.
