The History of the Gorillaz
The most distinctive element of the group is, ironically, not the music but their appearance: The Gorillaz are a purely comic band with individual characters, each with their own biography. The musical work is done by various musicians in the background.
Damon Albarn, lead singer of the Britpop band
Blur, and
comic artist Jamie Hewlett are the masterminds behind the animated rockstars. In
1998, while sitting frustrated in their apartment, criticizing the lack of inspiration in modern music videos, they had an idea: They wanted to create a virtual band that would parody the typical clichés of the modern music industry. Just two years later, the drawn band featuring Punk “2-D” (vocals), the 13-year-old “Noodle” (guitar), Satanist Murdoc Niccals (bass), and hip-hop fan Russel Hobbs (drums) was ready to launch. A first EP, TOMORROW COMES TODAY, was released. The group's big breakthrough came a year later with the single "Clint Eastwood," which became a worldwide hit. A month later, the self-titled debut album GORILLAZ was released, selling
over 7 million copies. Fans had to wait a bit for the next hit from the animated rockers. The follow-up, DEMON DAYS, came out in 2005 and featured numerous guest artists. The Gorillaz again achieved worldwide success and won a Grammy for the music video "Feel Good Inc." The band now even tours. At the celebrated Gorillaz concerts, the four comic characters are projected onto screens and monitors or appear on stage as
holograms.
