Just before the new year, we want to review all the cinema visits and streaming experiences of 2023. There were huge productions, exciting plots, and images that will continue to inspire for years. But which movies were the best this year? Ultimately, it's a matter of taste - nevertheless, today we list five of the most successful movies of the whole year that you could admire on the big screen. On one last cinematic journey before New Year's Eve!
Oppenheimer
Christopher Nolan has brought a three-hour film to the cinema with Oppenheimer. A film that received a lot of attention even before its release, not least due to a lot of Barbenheimer memes on the internet! Film fans know that Nolan is also famous for successful films like "The Dark Knight" and "Inception". So it was no question that Oppenheimer plays in the big league. Some stars could also be found in the cast. In the leading role Cillian Murphy, known for example from the series "Peaky Blinders" and from his role in "The Dark Night". And Robert Downey Jr. in his role as Lewis Strauss also shone. Even German actor Matthias Schweighöfer had an appearance! Despite its length, the film has become an absolute masterpiece worth watching, moving until the last minute.
Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse
Since the first part "Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse" was released, fans have been eagerly awaiting this sequel. Now it's here, and the reactions were overwhelmingly positive again. Especially the ending makes it extremely difficult to wait again. The plot is far from over! The animation style has delivered again and received a lot of praise. The Spider-Verse films will always be known for their innovative approach to combining 3D and 2D styles.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
Even if we all love the Guardians for their jokes and Peter's playlist - this time it really went deep emotionally. Not that there haven't been emotional scenes before, but this was really next level. And not too short either, with a runtime of 2 hours and 30 minutes. "Guardians of the Galaxy" was probably one of the few Marvel releases this year that received a lot of praise. As a fan of these chaos-makers, you definitely can't be disappointed. Even if the music doesn't necessarily get better from the 2000s onwards…
Barbie
The pink counterpart to the Barbenheimer meme. Margot Robbie's face seemed to be everywhere this year. A perfect casting for the role of Barbie alongside Ryan Gosling as Ken. And not only was the film and its message well received, but also the soundtrack has become a really good mix for summer. "I'm Just Ken" may have even ended up in some people's Spotify Wrapped. Or rather "What Was I Made For?" by Billie Eilish?
Killers of the Flower Moon
Killers of the Flower Moon is the latest release on this list. The film only started in cinemas in October, but high audience numbers were guaranteed. In the cast are Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone and Robert De Niro! Director Martin Scorsese has often worked with DiCaprio and De Niro and now expanded his list with full success. This time with a moving adaptation of a true story. If you haven't seen the movie yet, check out the trailer right away!
