The CEO of Larian Studios has given an update on the future of Baldur's Gate. Will the game continue or is the end in sight?
The sales numbers speak volumes: Baldur's Gate 3 is currently one of the most popular games on the market. Since the third installment of the series was released in 2023, it has already sold over 15 million copies. The fantasy role-playing game is based on the popular pen-and-paper role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons and received tons of positive reviews upon release. The game was also voted "Game of the Year" in 2023 and received 5 more Game Awards, such as "Best RPG".
Accordingly, the community is eagerly awaiting a sequel. However, there was a sobering update from Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke just recently.
Will There Be A Baldur's Gate 4?
Swen Vincke used his speech while receiving an award at the Game Developers Conference this March to speak candidly. He addressed the current situation in the games industry, where increasing layoffs are happening. His criticism of publishers was underscored with solutions for the future, even citing Baldur's Gate 3 as an example. However, during his speech, he made it clear that Larian Studios will not be producing a Baldur's Gate 4 and there will be no expansions for Baldur's Gate 3. Despite high demand, the developers want to focus on new projects and move on from Dungeons & Dragons."
"Baldur's Gate 3 will always have a warm spot in our hearts. We'll forever be proud of it, but we're not going to continue it.
Although fans may not like hearing this news, Vincke promises that new games are in the works and they will be able to compete with Baldur's Gate. So, we can look forward to the future of the studio with great anticipation!
