The band was formed in 2001 when singer and guitarist Michael Poulsen left his old death metal combo to create something entirely new. Two years later, their second demo CD was named the best demo of the month in Metal Hammer. The band quickly gained international attention. Their debut album THE STRENGTH / THE SOUND / THE SONGS initially sold slowly in their home country of Denmark but reached number 18 on the Danish charts. No heavy metal band had made it into the top 20 there for 10 years. Just one album later, Volbeat cemented their standing with ROCK THE REBEL / METAL THE DEVIL reaching number 1 in Denmark. Their subsequent albums also achieved massive success, with their biggest hits being the albums BEYOND HELL / ABOVE HEAVEN and OUTLAW GENTLEMAN & SHADY LADIES. Both releases sold over a million copies.
