In 1989, Brian Hugh Warner became Marilyn Manson, a name derived from the first name of actress Marilyn Monroe and the last name of criminal Charles Manson. With his eponymous band, he soon gained nationwide attention thanks to theatrical live performances, horror makeup, and provocative lyrics. The band released the album Portrait of an American Family in 1993. However, it was the follow-up Antichrist Superstar (1996) and its lead single "The Beautiful People" that truly catapulted the shock rocker to fame. While Mechanical Animals (1998), Holy Wood (2000), and The Golden Age Of Grotesque (2003) didn't surpass the debut in sales, they significantly contributed to the band's ever-growing popularity.
