Every one of you likely has a favorite Metallica song or at least one of their tracks in your most-played playlist, right? With the upcoming release of Metallica's new album 72 SEASONS, the music world is buzzing with anticipation. Caught up in Metallica fever, we wondered: What songs does the band itself favor?
The results come from Spotify playlists belonging to the band members and linked with Metallica's official Spotify account. Given the concise nature of these playlists, they must represent the personal recommendations of the band members themselves! So, if you're curious whether Metallica members jam out to their own songs or have other favorites, today you get your answer.
James Hetfield’s Playlist
It's not surprising that his playlist mainly features hard rock genres. However, we also see a different side of Metallica's frontman, such as jazz guitarist Bill Frisell and indie rock from Unknown Mortal Orchestra. You'll also find Gary Jules' "Mad World," known from the Donnie Darko soundtrack.
Additionally, several thrash bands like Venom or Dark Angel are present, and the band Ghost makes an appearance with "From The Pinnacle To The Pit." Music legend Johnny Cash is also featured with "The Highway Man"! You can check out the complete playlist on Spotify.
Kirk Hammet’s Playlist
Kirk's playlist presents a diverse mix. It's great to see that he included music from his own solo EP PORTALS! Of course, you'll also find songs from bands within the heavy music genres: Gojira's "Vacuity," Mastodon's "Blood and Thunder," and Lamb of God's "Set To Fail" are essentials for long bus rides.
Guitarist Jimi Hendrix, as well as rock bands Muse and Deep Purple, are among Kirk's favorites. Here’s the full playlist on Spotify.
Lars Ulrich’s Playlist
For Lars Ulrich, it’s clear: the best music genre in the world is rock, brimming with heavy riffs. Although a song by reggae legend Bob Marley sneaked onto the playlist, it's predominantly a high-energy collection. Favorites of Metallica’s drummer include "R U Mine?" by Arctic Monkeys, "Speed King" by Deep Purple, and Nirvana’s "Breed." System Of A Down and Rage Against The Machine perfectly round off the playlist.
Robert Trujillo’s Playlist
Robert's playlist hints at his musical past. Before joining Metallica in 2003, he was part of Ozzy Osbourne’s band, hence Osbourne’s hit “S.A.T.O.” is on the list. Before that, he played bass for Suicidal Tendencies, and even contributed to the song “You Can’t Bring Me Down.” Additionally, Robert has packed his playlist with songs from his thrash metal colleagues Slayer (“Raining Blood”) and a remix of Megadeth’s “Holy Wars… The Punishment Due.”
Other notable names on the list include Motörhead, Lamb of God, Alice in Chains, and Machine Head. You can find the complete playlist here:
