On January 7th, the annual Golden Globe Awards took place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. At this 81st award ceremony, celebrities were once again in abundance, and some of our (and hopefully your) absolute movie favorites of 2023 were nominated. Leading the way is "Oppenheimer" by Christopher Nolan, which took home 5 awards. But titles like "Barbie" and "The Boy And The Heron" from Studio Ghibli were honored with awards as well. We'll present the highlights to you here!
5 Awards for Oppenheimer
For his drama, the famous director Christopher Nolan received an award for the category best director. In addition, both Cillian Murphy for his leading role as Robert Oppenheimer and Robert Downey Jr. for his role as Lewis Strauss were rewarded with the trophies for "Best Actor" and "Best Supporting Actor". Furthermore, the film won awards for "Best Drama" and "Best Film Music"!

Barbie: More Nominations Than Awards
Greta Gerwig's successful movie hit "Barbie" was nominated for no less than nine categories! Due to the enormous reach and popularity of the film, one could have expected many awards. But in the end, it only resulted in two awards. Firstly, there was the newly introduced award for highest-grossing film. The second prize was taken home by pop singer Billie Eilish for the song "What Was I Made For?", which she co-wrote with her brother Finneas O'Connell.
Studio Ghibli: The Boy And The Heron
This year, the Japanese film studio won its first Golden Globe Award! "The Boy And The Heron" has received the award for best animated film. The creator behind it is filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, who is famous for popular animated films such as "Spirited Away" and "The Wind Rises". The new title has only been in cinemas since December 2023 and is considered to be the director's farewell film. Hayao Miyazaki is retiring (although this has been announced several times before and has never lasted long!).
Killers Of The Flower Moon - No Award For Leonardo DiCaprio
Director Martin Scorsese has worked with Leonardo DiCaprio multiple times, including the new movie "Killers Of The Flower Moon". However, the award for "Best Actor" did not go to Leo but rather to Cillian Murphy for his role as Oppenheimer. However, Lily Gladstone did receive an award for best actress in this drama!
TV Series Successes
Not only were the top films of 2023 honored, but TV series had their moments too. "Succession" leads with four awards. As "Best Series", this story about a family empire really stands out. Also, actress Sarah Snook and actor Kieran Culkin from the cast of the series came out on top: both were named best actors in the Drama category!
