Flagship For An Entire Genre
Furious double bass pounding, brutal shouts, razor-sharp riffing - when you think of
Metalcore, the name As I Lay Dying inevitably comes to mind. The band builds on an energetic musical concept similar to that of
Killswitch Engage, but also incorporates influences from Melodic Death Metal and Heavy Metal. Thus,
In Flames,
Judas Priest, and
Slayer are noticeably among the most important influences of Tim Lambesis & Co.The great journey began in 2000. With
Beneath The Encasing Of Ashes, the first album was released about a year after the band was formed. In 2003 they landed a record deal with Metalblade Records and released the albums
Frail Words Collapse and
Shadows Are Security. After that, they already played their first major support shows for The Black Dahlia Murder and Bullet For My Valentine. With the 2007 album
An Ocean Between Us they entered the US charts at number 8!
Challenging Years For The Band
With
The Powerless Rise and
Awakened, two more very successful albums were released between 2010 and 2012. As I Lay Dying were at the peak of their career and a golden future seemed to lie ahead for them. But then something happened that no one would have thought possible: singer Tim Lambesis was arrested for allegedly hiring a hitman to kill his wife. He confessed to the charges and was sentenced to 6 years in prison for solicitation of murder. The other members distanced themselves from Tim and the band and ventured into a new musical beginning with Wovenwar. One of the greatest Metalcore bands of all time seemed to be history.
The Comeback: Fresh Start
Tim Lambesis was released from prison early in 2016 due to good behavior. He publicly apologized to his wife and all the people he had hurt with his behavior. In 2018, the comeback that no one thought possible actually happened: As I Lay Dying released "My Own Grave," their first single after 5 years! It became part of the album
Shaped By Fire released in 2019.And although the comeback is highly controversial among musicians and listeners, the subsequent tour program sold out immediately. As I Lay Dying still remains one of the most significant bands in the entire Metal genre and has even been
nominated for a Grammy. Additionally, the band has already won at the
San Diego Music Awards 4 times and was honored with the title "Metal Band of the Year" by Loudwire Magazine as well as an MTV Music Award in the category "Ultimate Metal Gods".Although not long after their comeback a global pandemic broke out and three of the five band members left from 2020 to 2022, As I Lay Dying continues to be active. New additions Nick Pierce and Ken Susi from Unearth and Ryan Neff from Miss May I completed the lineup again. The fan base can continue to look forward to new music!
