1. The Super Mario Bros. Movie
Most of us grew up with Super Mario, be it the games on the old Nintendo consoles from the 80s, the Nintendo DS or the Wii. This year, Nintendo has released a movie about the Super Mario Bros. universe for the first time, drawing huge crowds to theaters. No wonder, everyone gets nostalgic, right? It grossed over $500 million in the U.S. alone. There are mixed opinions about the film in the reviews. It's best to see it for yourself anyway!
2. Barbie
The Barbie movie hasn't even been in theaters long, but it's already hit the ground running. It has been eagerly awaited for weeks: People swarmed into theaters in pink and rose-colored outfits. So far, Greta Gerwig's film has grossed almost $400 million in the U.S., ahead of Oppenheimer, which hit theaters on the same day. Apparently not everyone took the opportunity to treat themselves to a double feature after all. Anyway, Barbie is one of the must-see movies of 2023!
3. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Those who were already thrilled by the first part, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, will love the second part of the series even more. The innovative animation style does not disappoint once again and the story around Miles Morales is all the more exciting. With around 380 million US dollars, the Spider movie is currently in 3rd place in the USA! The trailer gives you a first impression:
4. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
We're moving forward with another sequel. The Marvel film series Guardians of the Galaxy has won many fans since the first film in 2014. The soundtrack alone is a reason to celebrate the films. It definitely gets very emotional in Vol. 3, we can promise that much. Almost 360 million US dollars have been grossed so far in the USA alone. A must-watch for all Marvel fans!
5. The Little Mermaid
Did you love the 1989 Disney classic Ariel the Mermaid, too? A live-action adaptation of this animated film hit theaters this year and has grossed about $300 million in the U.S. so far. In a direct comparison with the original, many Disney fans are sure to have a preference. Just check out the trailer to get an idea of what awaits you!
6. Avatar: The Way of Water
We had to wait many, many years for the second of a total of five planned films. The successful film Avatar by James Cameron was released back in 2009 and was the most successful film in the world until 2019. More than twelve years later, the sequel was released in December 2022. This time, Jake Sully and Neytiri are drawn out of the forest and into the world of water: definitely another visually stunning experience on the big screen. Internationally, the film has made it to number 3 of the most successful films of all time with around 2.3 billion US dollars grossed!
7. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania
The first part of this film series from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) was released in 2018 and received its sequel in 2023. In the U.S., the film grossed over 200 million dollars, in Germany just under 11 million. Even more input for Marvel fans!
8. Oppenheimer
This work by director Christopher Nolan is about the so-called "father of the atomic bomb", Robert Oppenheimer, played by Cillian Murphy. In connection with the film Barbie, countless memes were published on the Internet on the subject of "Barbenheimer". This, of course, really boosted the promotion of the film. In the U.S., it has grossed just under $200 million so far, and over $400 million worldwide. But of course, both Barbie and Oppenheimer haven't been out for long. So the numbers can still go up!
9. John Wick: Chapter 4
The fourth chapter of John Wick, played by Keanu Reeves, was released in theaters in March 2023 and scored the best theatrical release of the series to date. Overall, it grossed over $400 million internationally. The film also landed in first place on the theatrical charts in both the U.S. and Germany.
10. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
Did you ever think that another Indiana Jones movie would be released? The last part of the popular adventure series came out in 2008, quite a while ago. Nevertheless, the franchise is still popular and attracts a decent audience.
