Beatjuggling, Backspinning, Cutting, Phasing, and Scratching are inseparable from hip-hop. This music genre originated in the African American ghettos of the USA, such as New York's Bronx, and paved its way into the world. Kool DJ Herc experimented with beats here in the 70s, splicing and repeating them instead of playing entire tracks on the turntable. Unfortunately, few sound documents from that time remain, as it was believed that it wasn't worth selling records that played other records. Thus, it wasn't until 1979 that the first hip-hop record was available in stores. Initially, hip-hop was purely instrumental; rap came later, bringing themes like criticism of oppression, racism, and social injustice into hip-hop. The 90s saw a fresh musical breeze with rappers like Dr. Dre, Snoop Doggy Dogg and 2pac establishing hip-hop on the West Coast, replacing New York as its center. This led to the long-standing East Coast vs. West Coast feud. By the mid-90s, the genre evolved: beats became more complex, and reggae elements began to integrate into the music. Electro-funk also combined with hip-hop beats and effects.

Hip-Hop Today

Today, hip-hop is widespread around the globe. Hip-hop artists are no longer "underground" but perform internationally. Some of the most important hip-hop artists of our time include Jay-Z, Kanye West, Drake, Eminem, and 50 Cent. However, past artists like 2pac, The Notorious B.I.G, and MC Hammer are still frequently played on the radio. While the USA remains the stronghold of hip-hop, Europe, Asia, and some Arab countries also boast their own national hip-hop scenes. Numerous films have been made about the origins of this genre. "Wild Style," "Beat Street," "Style Wars," "8 Mile," and "All Eyez on Me" are productions that focus on hip-hop and its representatives.
