The Birth of the Volcom Brand
Volcom was founded in 1991 by Richard "Wooly" Woolcott and Tucker "T-Dawg" Hall. In the same year, the two friends went on a snowboarding trip, which gave them the idea to start a clothing company for women. As we know today, products for men were also added. The first famous skateboarder sponsored by the brand was Californian Chet Thomas. Volcom was different from other companies in their industry and founded their own record label,
Volcom Entertainment, in 1995. By unconventionally selling their artists' albums in surf, skate, and snowboard shops, they established them directly in their known scene. Over the years, they have released bands like
CKY,
Vaux, and
Pepper, and since 1997, they have been a staple with their own stage on the famous
Vans Warped Tour.
