As metal music continues to permeate pop culture, we’ve seen memorable moments like Metallica's “Master of Puppets” cameo in Stranger Things. It’s thrilling to see our favorite music genre gain more fans! Today, we’ve compiled a list of games that have embraced the thunderous sounds of metal.
Metal: Hellsinger
This game is pure metal. It's a fantasy first-person shooter that doubles as a rhythm video game. As you battle through a world full of demons, your actions must sync with the metal music playing in the background to maximize damage. A sense of rhythm is definitely an advantage here!
For the soundtrack, numerous well-known musicians have collaborated, including Matt Heafy from Trivium and Alissa White-Gluz from Arch Enemy.
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2
Since 1999, skaters have been able to enjoy their hobby digitally. These games are known for their top-notch soundtracks, featuring bands like Green Day, Mötley Crüe, and Mastodon. The latest game includes Rage Against The Machine’s “Guerilla Radio.”
Rock Band (Guitar Hero)
Created by the makers of Guitar Hero in 2007, Rock Band allows up to four players to simulate their own rock band. Known for its guitar controllers, there’s also a drum controller! This year, tracks like “Secret Garden” (Spiritbox) and “DiE4u” (Bring Me The Horizon) were added to the downloadable content.
DOOM
DOOM is one of the most famous video game franchises. In the latest installment, DOOM Eternal, the soundtrack is crafted by a unique "Heavy Metal Choir" put together following a call for "Metal Screamers" by composer Mick Gordon.
Halo 2
Released in 2004, this game proves that game producers have excellent taste in music! Alongside its own heavy instrumental tracks, bands like Breaking Benjamin and Incubus make cameo appearances in the game.
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
This action game is part of the Metal Gear series. Fans of musical experiments and industrial metal will enjoy this soundtrack, featuring guitar riffs by John Bush (former Anthrax singer, now with Armored Saint) and Logan Mader (former Machine Head guitarist).
Brütal Legend
In this action-adventure game, we follow Eddie Riggs, named after Eddie the Head, Iron Maiden’s mascot. The game features 107 metal tracks, including classics like “Never Say Die” by Black Sabbath and “Dr. Feelgood” by Mötley Crüe.
Quake
Dark fantasy games often feature intense soundtracks, and metal music is a perfect fit. Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails contributed to the soundtrack for the first Quake game, one of the first games with a true 3D environment.
Coffee Crisis
This game may seem lighter, but it tackles a serious theme: the coffee crisis in East Germany in the late 70s. In the game, evil aliens are the reason for the coffee shortage. Players must defend not only their coffee but also their metal music. The soundtrack is largely by the American band Greywalker.
Splatterhouse
We wrap up with another old-school horror game, whose soundtrack features contributions from Five Finger Death Punch, Lamb of God, and Mastodon, making it a true dream playlist.
