This year's Glastonbury Festival had a band named The Churnups announced for Friday night. It turned out to be Foo Fighters who surprised their fans with a show!
What a spectacular start to the festival weekend in England! You've barely arrived and there’s already such a huge surprise. But were all the spectators really unaware? Well, there were speculations in advance about who the mysterious band The Churnups could be. Many may have already solved the puzzle when Dave Grohl and his colleagues came on stage. Did you have any guesses?
How can the name be derived?
We’ll tell you what the name is all about. It goes back to a message that Dave Grohl once addressed to the loyal Foo Fighters fans. In this message, he wrote:
“Every night, when I see you singing, it makes me sing harder. When I see you screaming, it makes me scream louder. When I see your tears, it brings me to tears. And when I see your joy, it brings me joy. But, I see you … and it feels good to see you, churning up these emotions together.”
Those who remembered this emotional message, especially in their hearts, must have been very moved last weekend on June 23, when Foo Fighters performed under the temporary pseudonym. With the message, singer and guitarist Dave Grohl thanks his fans for their support at the first concerts after the tragic death of Taylor Hawkins, their long-time friend and drummer.
Moreover, Foo Fighters played their first show at the Glastonbury Festival exactly 25 years ago, also on the Pyramid Stage on a Friday night. So, it was a hidden anniversary performance!
It’s clear that Foo Fighters stirred some emotions with such a heartwarming surprise. Did you make the connection between The Churnups and Foo Fighters, or were you genuinely surprised?
At least Dave Grohl himself definitely trusted his fans to unravel the secret. On stage, he commented:
“You knew it was us, right? … We’re not good at secrets.”
If you want to see the great show for yourself, you can watch several live videos of their performance at the Glastonbury Festival on YouTube. Here's a snippet:
