Pixies Merch – The Unsung Kings of Rock
Although the Pixies are often not mentioned in the same breath as the great rock bands of history like
Led Zeppelin,
The Rolling Stones, or
Pink Floyd, their
profound influence on the development of modern rock music is undeniable. Unfortunately, the group led by singer Black Francis faced a fate similar to that of the
Ramones or
Joy Division: they only gained significant fame after their
breakup in 1993. Unlike the other two bands, however, the Pixies had a
comeback in 2004. Since then, the world has consistently enjoyed sold-out Pixies concerts globally. Their anthem "Where Is My Mind?" remains one of the most famous Pixies songs and has frequently been used in film soundtracks.
Between Surf Music and Punk Rock
The strong alternative rock of the Boston-based group is characterized by a mix of loud and quiet elements. The Pixies combine surf music in the style of the Beach Boys with gritty punk rock. The fragile guitar sound became their trademark, which the band strategically amplified with dynamically driving drums and a strong bass presence. With this sound structure, the group was
pioneering for the grunge wave that took the world by storm in the early '90s with bands like
Nirvana,
Pearl Jam, and
Soundgarden. Bands from other genres, such as
U2,
Radiohead, and
Weezer, also cite the Pixies as a major inspiration for their own music.
The History of the Pixies
The Pixies formed in 1986 in Boston, USA. The following year, they created a demo called THE PURPLE TAPE, which included 17 songs. The record label 4AD noticed the band, and the guys signed a record deal. Their debut EP was titled COME ON PILGRIM. In 1988, the group released their first album, SURFER ROSA, which is
retrospectively considered one of the most important rock albums of the '80s. Their second album, DOOLITTLE, was released in 1989 and came across much rawer than its predecessor. While the group was still waiting for their big break in America, the singles "Here Comes Your Man" and "Monkey Gone To Heaven" hit the Top-10 in the UK. With Bossanova (1990) and TROMPE LE MONDE (1991), the group released two more albums before internal conflicts arose. As a result, the Pixies disbanded in 1993. While it seemed for a long time that the Pixies were history, their body of work received great recognition and admiration from musicians, critics, and fans. In 2004, the band made an unexpected comeback, and their subsequent US tour was completely sold out. With recent releases like INDIE CINDY (2014), HEAD CARRIER (2016), and BENEATH THE EYRIE (2019), the group has expanded their musical legacy. The Pixies have been honored many times for their musical significance, and numerous bands consider them one of the most influential rock bands in history. NME magazine even named their album DOOLITTLE the second-best album in music history.
