From Blues To Hard Rock

What many don’t know: Aerosmith’s roots lie in the blues. This is especially evident in the music from the band’s early days. Steven Tyler’s exceptional voice and Joe Perry’s melodic guitar playing have always been trademarks of the group. Over the course of their career, rough hard rock and ballads emerged as the band’s great strengths. Influenced by groups like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith were seen as the spearhead of a handful of bands that dominated the hard rock genre from the mid-80s to the mid-90s. World stars like Van Halen, Mötley Crüe, and Guns N' Roses regard Aerosmith as idols and an important source of inspiration.

The History Of Aerosmith

Aerosmith emerged in 1970 from the bands Chain Reaction and Jam Band. Based in New Hampshire, the group made a name for themselves through club shows in the region. Columbia Records noticed Steven Tyler & Co. and offered the group a record deal. In 1973, they released their self-titled debut album, but it was not until their third album in 1975 that the group made their breakthrough. On Toys in the Attic, Aerosmith found their signature style and celebrated international chart success with the songs "Sweet Emotions" and "Walk This Way." The follow-up LPs Rocks (1976) and Draw the Line (1977) continued the success of their predecessor. However, the band’s excessive drug use increasingly spiraled out of control. Repeated disputes within the band led to guitarists Perry and Whitford leaving the band. The next two albums flopped, and it seemed Aerosmith’s glory days were over. However, the return of Perry and Whitford marked a turning point in the downward spiral. While the 1985 album Done with Mirrors went relatively unnoticed, the group returned to the spotlight a year later. The reinterpreted "Walk This Way" by the hip-hop combo Run DMC in collaboration with Aerosmith became a worldwide hit and is considered a groundbreaking song for the development of crossover and nu-metal. Permanent Vacation became a huge success worldwide. Aerosmith was unstoppable and dominated the following decade as one of the most successful rock bands in the world. In 2004, the group revived their roots with the cover album Honkin' on Bobo and interpreted well-known songs in the blues style. The band released their last long player in 2012 with Music from Another Dimension!. And even though the big successes are already a while back: Nearly 15 million monthly listeners on Spotify and around 20 million social media followers show that Aerosmith is still relevant today. The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001. Aerosmith songs like "Crazy," "On The Edge," or "Crying" are now considered absolute rock classics.
