From Rap to Pop-Punk

A rapper with a penchant for bands like Blink 182 and State Champs; Machine Gun Kelly surprised his fans when he announced his departure from rap to focus on the pop-punk genre. What initially sounded like a joke to many is now a reality: On his fifth album Tickets To My Downfall, released in 2020, the musician delivers one pop-punk gem after another, achieving a quality remarkably close to the mentioned acts. He continued this style with Mainstream Sellout in 2022. The musician already had a highly successful career prior. Songs like "Till I Die," "Chip Off The Block," and "Sail" are the most famous releases from his rap era.

The Career of Machine Gun Kelly

Colson Baker aka Machine Gun Kelly experienced a turbulent youth filled with moves and constant change, leading to a feeling of never truly being at home. Seeking direction, he dedicated himself to music at the age of 14, discovering rap through Ludacris and his idol DMX. With the albums General Admission (2015) and Bloom (2017), the artist rose to the top tier of international rap. Additionally, Machine Gun Kelly has increasingly been seen as an actor, such as in the Mötley Crüe biopic "The Dirt," where he portrayed Tommy Lee. A year later, the musician released another album titled Hotel Diablo, which hinted at a stylistic shift towards rock music. The single "Hollywood Whore" is dedicated to the late Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington.
