Here, players could (and still can) complete quests, explore dungeons with friends, or simply roam the vast landscapes of Azeroth.

Expansions and Innovations: Azeroth Grows
Blizzard, the developer behind WoW, has never stood still. From "The Burning Crusade" to "Wrath of the Lich King" and "Legion", each expansion brought new areas to explore, quests to complete, and epic stories to experience. The most beloved expansion, however, is undoubtedly Wrath of the Lich King. Why? The battle against the Lich King Arthas is regarded as one of the absolute highlights in WoW history. The balance between epic storytelling, PvE, and PvP content was so well done that many players still consider this era the best time in WoW.

Hollywood also wanted to ride the WoW hype, and in 2016, a long-anticipated WoW movie hit the screens. Unfortunately, the film failed to meet the expectations of fans and critics alike, becoming another addition to the list of unsuccessful video game adaptations.
Horde vs. Alliance: What’s Your Team?
Horde vs. Alliance. This rivalry endures to this day and is not only a core part of the game but also a massive element of WoW’s pop culture. On PvP servers, battles between players often escalated into epic war scenes. YouTube videos and memes like “For the Horde!” or “For the Alliance!” showcase just how deep this rivalry runs. And yes, memes were already a thing back then.
Paladins, Druids, and the Meta
From the very beginning, WoW offered a wide variety of classes, with the Paladin quickly becoming a fan favorite. Close behind were Hunters and Druids, who, in the early days, were often said to be "jack of all trades, master of none." Constant adjustments to the game’s balance ensured that the meta stayed fresh, allowing players to develop their own unique playstyles.
The Dark Side of Success
With great success comes great challenges. In its early years, WoW caused some players to spend too much time in Azeroth, neglecting their real lives in the process. Some even quit their jobs just to dedicate more time to the game. Stories like these dominated the media, making WoW synonymous with gaming addiction.
Blizzard responded by adjusting game mechanics to promote a healthier gaming experience. Still, these “wild times” remain an integral part of WoW’s history.

As mentioned earlier, the WoW community has always been something special. Guilds became virtual families, and friendships forged in the game often lasted a lifetime. Some players even organized real-life guild meetups to celebrate their adventures together.
The creative spirit of the World of Warcraft community also became evident early on in the thriving cosplay scene. Many players poured countless hours into creating impressive costumes, bringing their favorite characters from Azeroth to life in the real world.

The Most Famous Meme: Leeroy Jenkins
You’ve probably heard of the most famous WoW meme: “Leeeeerooooy Jeeeenkins!” This iconic moment, where a player sabotaged an entire raid with an impulsive action, became a classic in gaming culture. It’s a meme that still represents chaos and fun in the community and has even coined the term “Leeroy Jenkins move” for reckless actions that lead to disaster – often dragging others down as well.

Even after 20 years, World of Warcraft shows no signs of slowing down. With new expansions, updates, and the return of WoW Classic, Blizzard continues to prove that Azeroth is alive and well.
