What is Rockabilly and where does it come from?

Rockabilly is a style of Rock 'n' Roll music that emerged in the mid-1950s. In addition, elements of country music flow in, hence the name Rockabilly: The first half of the name comes from Rock 'n' Roll, the second from the term "Hillybilly". The word from the USA refers to people who tend to live in rural regions. However, the term has only been common since the 1980s, when rockabilly experienced its great revival. The music direction found its beginnings with the label Sun Records in Memphis, Tennessee. Its founder, the blues producer Sam Phillips, defied the prevailing social conditions at the time: both white and black musicians were under contract on his label. In the USA there was still a strict classification of people into races at that time, which is why Phillips stood out from other labels with his concept. In order to give the youth protest movement that arose in the 1940s, which among other things rebelled against this racial segregation, its own musical style, Phillips created Rockabilly. The new mix of black and white pop music, mixed with elements of blues and gospel, was ultimately embodied by none other than the young Elvis Presley, who years later would rise to become the King of Rock 'n' Roll. Incidentally, in 1955 another musical legend appeared as an opening act for Presley: Johnny Cash was also musically inspired by the influences of Rockabilly.
