In Los Angeles in the 1990s, a side project emerged from the well-known progressive rock band Tool. Singer Maynard James Keenan recognized the musical potential of then-guitar technician Billy Howerdel, who had already been working with various scene greats like Nine Inch Nails and U2. Thus, the progressive rock band A Perfect Circle was born. The debut album Mer de Noms (Sea of Names) from 2000 immediately brought the band its first successes. Reaching number 4 on the Billboard 200, it was the highest-ranked rock debut ever. The band's sound was less dark and more melodic than Tool's, yet it continued to captivate many loyal fans. The band's lineup changed several times early on. Among others, guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen, who later became a permanent member of desert rockers Queens Of The Stone Age, played in A Perfect Circle. The Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha and Jeordie White, former bassist of Marilyn Manson, also joined. In 2003, the album Thirteenth Step followed, proving that the lineup changes were fruitful. After the political concept album eMOTIVe, it then remained quiet for many years.
