I'm sure you've also heard about the two seemingly fundamentally different movies that were both released in theaters on the same day. Yesterday, July 20, 2023, both Barbie and Oppenheimer hit theaters. The target audiences couldn't seem more different - but the trend of the Barbenheimer double feature is huge.
If you've been on the fence about which movie to go to first: Why not just both? You couldn't get a better contrast. While Barbie tells the live-action story of the popular plastic doll, Oppenheimer focuses on Robert Oppenheimer's invention of the atomic bomb.
Both films score with well-known names: Oppenheimer is produced by Christopher Nolan, who has already directed titles like Inception and the Batman trilogy. Robert Oppenheimer is portrayed on screen by Irish actor Cillian Murphy, also known from the British series Peaky Blinders.
In Barbie you'll meet Margot Robbie, who has already gained great fame for the films Suicide Squad of Birds of Prey. She plays Barbie herself, of course, with Ryan Gosling as Ken by her side. Gosling won a Golden Globe Award in 2017 for his role in La La Land. The pink-colored film is directed by Greta Gerwig, also known for her work on 2019's Little Women. It should be emphasized at this point that Barbie is by no means intended as a sparkly film for children. On the contrary, Barbie focuses on current issues such as the position of women and men in society - with seriousness, but also with a lot of humor.
Tip: Type "Barbie" into Google - your screen will go right along with the hype.
Barbenheimer - Memes over Memes
For weeks now, the hype around the two films has been mounting and has developed into a veritable meme landscape on the Internet. The pink Barbieland is combined with explosion backgrounds from Oppenheimer - what a cinematic experience. Fans are bringing all their creativity to the table, helping to make this a release to remember.

Ryan Gosling & Jimin (BTS) In The Same Outfit
If you actively follow the Korean boy group BTS and are now also a Barbie fan, you will notice that dancer and singer Jimin wears the same outfit in the music video for "Permission To Dance" as Ryan Gosling does as Ken in the Barbie movie. The actor noticed it too and in an Instagram post he shares it with the public:
"I have to give it to you: You wore it first. You definitely wore it best."
As a gesture of honor on behalf of his character Ken, Ryan Gosling now gives the guitar from the Barbie movie to Jimin. Who would have thought that these two worlds would touch here too?
Barbie Premiere Without Leading Actors
The premiere for the Barbie movie in Germany already took place on July 15 in Berlin, but neither Margot Robbie nor Ryan Gosling were there. This is due to the current strike in Hollywood: The Screen Actors Guild has called a strike. This union represents around 160,000 actors and actresses. As a result, film production in the U.S. is currently at a standstill and some delays can be expected with regard to future releases. Demands are being made for appropriate compensation in the face of inflation, as well as rules for dealing with artificial intelligence (AI). Nevertheless, the premiere's pink carpet featured a number of stars. Among them was Bill Kaulitz, lead singer of the band Tokio Hotel.
